What BYNC can do for You, Your Organization, Your School
BackYard Nature Center (BYNC) is a not-for-profit organization that facilitates the process of connecting children and adults with the wonders of nature. These “wonders of nature” sites include the forest preserves and village parks. The “connecting” process involves the following programs and activities:
- Stewardship and Service-Learning: Service activities include removal of invasive species including buckthorn, garlic mustard, teasel, and Canadian thistle, seed collection, planting and litter pickup. BYNC can expand the stewardship with a relevant and timely learning experience.
- Education: BYNC can expand your school’s curriculum with its Nature as Teacher Program (NaT) to include using a nearby natural habitat to supplement the students’ classroom learning experience – the students learn from being out in nature.*
- Nature-Based Play: BYNC connects children and adults with local natural habitats to promote inquiry and exploration, and develop attitudes, values and actions in the direction of a healthy environment.
- Support for Healthy habitat: BYNC offers presentations, exhibits and articles that advocate for healthy and biodiverse natural environs.
*Nature as Teacher (NaT) Program
The basic premise of the Nature as Teacher (NaT) program is to have students utilize their nearby natural habitat to supplement their classroom learning experience. The curriculum subject matter could include science, math, art, writing and poetry, and history, with the learning focus on inter-disciplinary problem-solving and critical thinking. The NaT program involves the use of ecologists, curriculum specialists, and stewards all assisting teachers to design learning experiences that are in sync with the curricular guidelines of the teachers and their respective school districts. BYNC coordinates all the resources and logistical issues to bring the NaT Program to fruition. The Program also provides the students the opportunity to broaden their understanding and reach a deeper appreciation for their natural environment. The benefits are limitless.
